How Do The Experts Care For Their Lawns?
Lawn care secrets
Ever heard of pre-emergent or preventative lawn care? This is the number 1 strategy used by experts to ensure a luscious lawn.
The turf industry uses pre-emergent, or preventative products, to control issues before they become a problem.
The technology behind these products is simply amazing. The effectiveness & safety is an absolute god-send for us lawnies!
For weed control, they form a barrier within the soil to kill selected weeds seeds before they germinate. They won’t work on weeds that are already present.
For insect control, they again, form a barrier in the soil to kill selected insects as the eggs hatch to prevent them growing to the larvae stage which causes the most damage to our lawns.
How can you protect your lawn?
There are pre-emergent products for weed control & also insects which are available to the homeowner.
Annual Weeds – Winter Grass, Summer Grass, African Lovegrass, Parramatta Grass, Crab Grass, Crowsfoot Grass.
Insects – Lawn Army Worms, Cutworm, Sod Webworm, African Black Beetle, Argentinian Scarab & Billbugs.
When should you apply pre-emergent products to your lawn?
Now you understand how they work, let’s get to it!
Annual weed-seeds need to be controlled when soil temperatures are right for their germination.
Summer Grass etc will germinate when soil temps get around 12-15deg so the time is early Spring.
Winter Grass seeds germinate when soil temps get down to 11-12deg so the best time is late summer to early Autumn.
Our Insect control product needs to be applied before they become a problem. Our most common insect pests are African Black Beetle & Lawn Army Worm.
The time to treat African Black Beetle is early Spring, so early September. This way you’ll get the product applied before the late-larvae stage which cause the most damage. It’s also advisable to treat for the adult Black Beetle as they burrow into the soil to sleep over winter. This is best around early March.
Lawn Army Worm are doing their damage when the temperatures are high between Summer – Autumn, so we need to have our product out by then.
What do experts use & how do they use it?
There’s granular & liquid products for both weed & insect control depending on which you prefer. Which ever way you go they must be applied correctly & a full blanket-coverage of the lawn is crucial for proper control. Because they work by forming that protective layer within the soil layer, they need to be watered-in really well after application.
Granulars can be spread-out using a fertiliser spread, whether that’s the small hand-held size or a bigger walk behind unit.
Liquids are applied by using a pressure sprayer, either the 5 Litre hand sprayer or the 15L backpack type. It’s best to use a flat-fan nozzle with either of these to achieve the very best coverage.
